Dstl supported the DPA in the development
of the new Javelin anti-tank weapon, winning an award for SMART procurement.
Significant development of an in-service American weapon has provided
the British forces with a tailored, man portable, point-and-shoot system
that has significantly improved optics and control.
In trials conducted by Dstl, the effectiveness was proved in a head-to-head
comparison with the rival Israeli ‘Spike’ system, demonstrating
improved target acquisition and strike at up to 2.3km. More portable
than its predecessors, the system also offers computer-based simulation
training, which greatly increases performance and accuracy under field
conditions.
