Security on the high seas

For the first time in maritime history, Dstl successfully provided the Royal Navy with live situational awareness of commercial shipping movements during Trafalgar 200 Fleet Review (T200). In support of security operations for this prestigious event, the Royal Navy gave Dstl the responsibility for mapping the movements of all commercial ships present in the English Channel.

Dstl designed and built a system based on Automatic Identification of Shipping (AIS) that collected data using receivers from Dstl and a commercial supplier. This data was automatically merged by Dstl software, converted to Royal Navy standard and disseminated by email in real-time to HMS Albion.

HMS Albion was responsible for coordinating security operations for T200 and used Dstl’s data to enhance the Recognised Maritime Position.
