What sort of work do we do?

The following pages explain the work that Dstl does through the use of examples and case studies and the explanation of our capabilities.

We are primarily focused on the needs and future requirements of MOD and our Armed Forces and therefore our working areas tackle land, sea and air system requirements where we explore, analyse and advise on weapons systems research, the balance of investment, technical risk and top-level systems research. Our experts integrate their work with technology, policy and capability studies at every level.

We fully understand the roots of systems concepts as we work at all stages of military planning. Systems work is about bringing together the physical, human and conceptual elements necessary to achieve heightened performance. This, in turn, enables us to provide advice from the operational through to strategic level decision making.

We can make modifications to existing technology or introduce new innovative technologies to best suit the issues and the available budget. Our staff are also deployable to the MOD, Armed Forces and other government departments to act as the hub for science and technology, integrating ideas with other projects across the government if required.
