Science on the front line

Dstl’s scientists and operational analysts are now an essential component of military operations and stand ready to be deployed, at any time, wherever they are needed in the world.

They are normally embedded within military HQs and, once deployed to theatre with our Armed Forces, be they in conflict or peacekeeping situations, Dstl’s analysts can offer real-time expert science and technology advice to military commanders. Their individual expertise in theatre is enhanced by the ability to ‘reach back’ to the whole Dstl knowledge base, covering a wide range of scientific disciplines and technical expertise. This enables rapid solutions to problems facing commanders and can speed procurement in response to Urgent Operational Requirements.

Key elements of Dstl’s support in theatre include:

  • Data gathering and incident analysis
  • ‘what ifs’ and course of action analysis
  • chemical, biological and radiological advice and analysis
  • advice on human/equipment performance and factors in local conditions, and ensuring best use of novel technology.

Dstl’s expert knowledge derived from its research base has meant that scientists were able to make a significant contribution to the technical part of the investigation into the loss of a RAF Hercules C-130K aircraft in Iraq. Dstl’s analysis and advice led to some key conclusions as to the cause of this loss and how to avoid such incidents in the future.
