Science on the home front

Dstl’s profound understanding and knowledge of science and technology is relied upon across Government. Our experts are always ready to be deployed or provide advice whenever and wherever they might be needed. For example, our expertise is made available to a number of Government departments in response to conventional and Chemical and Biological (CB) terrorism.

Providing ongoing assistance to the UK’s security is our forensic explosives experts. The team was deployed immediately to the explosion scenes in London on the 7th July 2005 and our experts worked tirelessly to retrieve and analyse as much forensic evidence as possible to help the Police with their investigation.

In the area of CB terrorism, we support the response units at all levels, from the scene of the incident to policy decision makers in Government. Our incident support service includes detection of CB agents and advising on contamination and control. This allows the Police and other key personnel to continue working safely at the scene and arms them with essential knowledge to continue their investigations.

Dstl provides the UK’s only facility for testing suspected chemical or biological weapon materials. Scientists at this facility have processed over a thousand samples on behalf of the Home Office. This round-the-clock service rapidly delivers the reliable results needed in such critical situations.

In support of peace keeping, our expertise is invaluable in providing knowledge or novel technological solutions to a range of sensitive issues. This work encompasses our research and development into using less lethal force and we are also central to providing an understanding of the operation and disruption of terrorist and crime networks.

In essence, if the experience gained through our knowledge of science and technology in the defence world can help to make the UK a safer place, we remain adaptable and willing to help our colleagues in other government departments.
