Supporting policy decision makers

Dstl is agile in its response to all customers, be they military personnel in theatre or a civil servant at HQ MOD, and supplies the same quality of impartial advice wherever and at whatever level it is needed.

At a strategic level, we use science and technology to push the boundaries of current military policies and doctrine to provide support to those making policy decisions in defence and security.

As well as offering support to policy formation, our experts look at overall planning, military capability decisions and the peacetime management of the MOD. We also assess the development of doctrine and concepts of operation in partnership with other parts of the MOD. Our advice is impartial and can provide an essential part of the evidence base for decision-making.

We are currently conducting a study for the future development of the Royal Navy. The Maritime Surface Fleet Balance of Investment study aims to compare options for future surface fleet size and mix, including logistic shipping. Taking into account industrial implications, the study will support the range of operations defined by the MOD up to 2035.

Delivering security in a changing world case study.
