Name: Cressida
Role: Analyst
Department: Policy & Capability Studies
“I wanted a job in which I could use my degree, particularly Operational Research which
I’d really enjoyed at university - and Dstl has one of the largest numbers of Operational
Analysts in the country. I went along to a Dstl presentation during my third year at University
and was really impressed by their enthusiasm.
I also wanted a job that would make a difference. Recently I've been working on improving
synthetic training for aircrew, and taking part in trials with RAF Tornado squadrons really
brought home the impact of the work we do. I’ve had plenty of opportunities to increase my
knowledge with Dstl providing lots of training events - from presentation skills to a Battlefield Tour.
I've worked on a variety of projects since I got here - from analysing defence capability
to identifying the most effective way of capturing current attitudes in Iraq. That's one of
the best things about Dstl; there are plenty of different projects to get stuck into and the
chance to take extra responsibilities early on, which might include managing big projects or
meeting with customers. After being here less than a year I was already presenting my work to
over 100 people at the Defence Statistics Conference.
As well as being heavily involved with people and project management, I’m still an
active mathematician and have recently been given innovation funding by our principal customer,
the MOD, to plan and run my own small study on interception algorithms.
This year I'm managing the new starters 'Scheme for Technical Events and Professional Support'
(STEPS) which has given me the chance to work with senior management and get the views of
graduate across. There are plenty of events to help increase new starters’ technical
and military awareness and which also encourage networking. Everyone’s very friendly
here and although our work is critical, there’s a relaxed atmosphere.
There’s also a good work/life balance and lots of other grads to ensure your social life
doesn't take too much of a tumble after leaving university! Last year a friend and I headed up the
committee for a Dstl-wide Ball which was a great success!”
