Name: Nicola
Role:Team Member
Department: Policy & Capability Studies
"I joined Dstl in 1999 when we were known as DERA. Since then, I've provided support for a wide
variety of projects, although I've also run my own a smaller project which gave me a
good appreciation of a project manager's role.
I spent two years helping Dstl to prepare for the Freedom of Information Act, which came into play
in January 2005, and I produced a user guide for ERS3 (our Electronic Registry System) that's
used as a source of reference across Dstl. I've also worked on other guides, such as those for new recruits,
and I'm now part of the Strategic Analysis Group within Policy & Capability Studies, so there's always been
plenty to keep me busy.
The training has been excellent, too. I've attended technical innovation forums, where I've had
encouraging feedback, and I've recently enrolled on a psychology distance learning course. Nothing
has held me back, despite the fact that I have a condition called Myoclonus Dystonia. The symptoms
started when I was ten, although it was only after I joined Dstl that the condition was actually diagnosed.
It can affect all parts of my body, and because it is a rare condition, it is sometimes trial and
error with medication - but everyone has been so supportive. I've never been treated differently,
nor would I expect to be, but I know I'm lucky to work for an organisation with a good occupational
health department. Dstl is also a very sociable place; there's always some activity going on somewhere!"
