“Dstl is a lot more dynamic than some people think – we work on really interesting, cutting-edge stuff.
For example, I analyse past conflicts in the hope that they may
cast light on important issues facing the MOD today. I have worked
on diverse issues such as post-conflict reconstruction, refugee
movement modelling, and conflict forecasting. Everyday is different;
at the moment, for example, I am working on three very distinct
projects all at the same time.
The transition from university to working life has been relatively easy due to the culture here, which sometimes feels
like an improved university campus but without the alcohol! The flexitime also helps – I can choose my hours, which
can be between 7am and 7pm, which means I’ve plenty of time for other things in life.
And there has also been a plethora of opportunities to help me get up to speed. I’ve taken part in the Graduate
Technical Training Programme, for example; a series of talks and seminars that have helped me get up to speed on the work
of Dstl and the MOD. I have also been given relative freedom in organising my own training programme and have sent myself
on IT and statistics courses. There have also been opportunities to attend international conferences and I have recently
attended the International Association of Forced Migration conference in Brazil, which is helping with my research.
As I have taken well to the job I have been given lots of responsibility at an early stage and I have the freedom to
plan my research and have enjoyed lots of networking opportunities and maintain good links to academia. My work
has been mainly focussed towards producing short reports on my findings, much the same as a university essay but
more policy oriented! I have also had to present to more senior members of the MOD which has given me a buzz!
Sometimes it can be frustrating that I can’t discuss the detail of what I do with my friends and family, but
there’s so much to stimulate me here. I might even consider a secondment to another part of MOD
in a couple of years to broaden my experience further.”
