“I like the fact that the graduate scheme here isn’t rigid - it’s real work from the start with plenty of training and support. As well as the standard courses that all graduates attend, such as presentation skills, report writing and so on, I’ve attended several different technical courses so far. In fact all my requests for training have been fully supported. There are also plenty of informative presentations which can be attended and I have also been involved in some interesting physical and mental team-building exercises organised by our colleagues in the Army.
That’s not to say there isn’t a really steep learning curve when you join; it was a real challenge to maintain a balance between projects whilst considering my wider development needs. However, it wasn’t long before I was presenting experimental work at a conference at the Military Academy in Shrivenham - so you develop fast.
In my day to day role, I lead studies related to heat transfer in the area of stealth technology – aircraft and missiles designed to be less detectable. I also manage a range of projects related to propulsion systems of military jets. Whilst the main focus is on maturing the UK’s capability, I also liaise closely with international partners where appropriate. I also enjoy wider roles within Dstl such as representing the Lab at careers fairs and I recently had the opportunity to present recommendations to the Board regarding Dstl’s future Corporate Social Responsibility programme.
What I like most about Dstl is that I’m always learning. There are lots of career paths open to me and I’m free to choose which are most suitable for me. And I like the flexible hours too: I have a young family so I sometimes work a four-day week, which gives me extra time to spend with them.”
