Name: David
Role: Member of Synthetic Environments & Collective Training Team
Department: Policy & Capability Studies
“I graduated in 1983 with a degree in Psychology from Bedford College, University of London,
before embarking upon quite a varied career. I decided to use my degree and became a Psychologist
at the Admiralty Research Establishment. Then I moved into academia, took on various Systems
Administrator/Manager roles and entered the dotcom revolution. I joined Dstl in 2004 having
gained an MSc in Human Computer Interaction at University College London.
“What really attracted me to Dstl was the chance to get involved in challenging technical
work in an interesting and unique setting. There’s been a huge amount to learn about
distributed simulations and how they are used, as well as learning about the military itself
– my previous naval experience has been a help but, so far, I’ve mainly worked
with the Army and the RAF. That’s why the training I’ve received here has been
so invaluable. Aside from the corporate induction and management training, this has included
a four-day distributed simulation course in Orlando.
“I’ve been at Dstl for a relatively short time, but I feel I’ve already
achieved quite a lot. I’ve set up simulators and controlled literally dozens of simulated
aircraft at a time for training and experimental trials. As well as Orlando, I’ve
travelled to Paris, Coblenz, The Hague and Washington – even Fort Knox. Now I’m
developing a test/demonstration suite for Synthetic Environments and working on UK and NATO
panels on simulation interoperability and re-use.
“The field of Synthetic Environments is increasing in importance and I’d like
to have a part to play in developing the technology and helping people to benefit from it.
There’s a great bunch of people here too, although I’m often at a different site
from the rest of my team. That said, it’s a very sociable place with lots to do –
I’m becoming a bit of a dab hand at archery!”
