Sensor Systems


We provide advice in supporting MoDs major procurements, rapid response to questions from front line commanders, formulation of research strategy and development of novel systems and network solutions. This work is performed across the entire set of possible sensor technologies [e.g. Radar, Electro-optics, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Electronic Surveillance, Magnetic, Novel], platforms [e.g. Space, Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV), Ships, Man-portable] and domains [e.g. Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisitions and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), Force Protection, Counter Terrorism].

The mission for Sensor Systems group is “To provide MOD with a focus for expert advice in individual and multiple sensor systems in all domains and environments, to create synergies with technology and expertise in air, land, maritime and space domains to enhance the systems approach through effective sensor integration and fusion”.

We investigate novel solutions to a broad set of sensor technology problems. We investigate optronics for the protection of sensors, underwater sensor physics, signal and data processing and develop and support situation awareness sensor systems to support platform protection.

Surveillance


We develop Surveillance technology solutions, specifically Electronic Surveillance Measures (ESM). We explore ES/ESM systems use of Radio Frequency (RF) receivers to detect, characterise and identify RF signals transmitted by both RADAR and communications systems.
