New participants join 2003 JWID demonstration
Press Day Monday 23rd June 2003
The Joint Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (JWID) will include
four new participants at this year’s event. Military forces from
Japan, Singapore, Thailand and South Korea will join Australia, Canada,
NATO (Shape), New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States
in the annual exercise.
JWID will be held from the 9th – 27th June 2003, with a dedicated
press day on Monday 23rd June 2003.
The aim of JWID03 is to introduce new and evolving technologies that
may offer potential solutions to capability requirements and interoperability
communications issues. Areas to be demonstrated include:
- Multi-level security and information sharing
- C4I / ISTAR interoperability
- Enhanced battle space management
- Web-enabled interface for integrated information
- Data-link and broadcast information integration
- ISTAR fusion technologies.
For the second year, the event will be held at the purpose built battle
lab facility developed by Dstl, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory,
at its site at Portsdown West (Portsmouth). Its flexible design means
that the laboratory can be adapted to host Command, Control and Information
Infrastructure experimentation in support of MOD projects. This allows
JWID to create a network that can host a wide range of interoperability
trials and demonstrations that are assessed within a coalition exercise
scenario.
Lt Col Tim John, JWID Project Manager, said:
‘JWID has been hugely successful throughout its nine year history
and we are delighted to welcome the new participants to this year’s
exercise. The use of Dstl’s purpose built lab will ensure that
we have all the facilities and dedicated staff we need to be able to
enhance UK forces capability through the use of communications, intelligence
and surveillance.’
The battle laboratory is located in the mercury building at Dstl’s
Portsdown West site near Portsmouth within the Joint Command and Battlespace
Management Applied Research Technology Demonstrator. Full operating
capability was achieved on 31, March 2002, nine months ahead of schedule.
The laboratory now has the additional capability to represent the Land,
Air, Maritime, Special Forces and Logistics Component Commanders. The
Laboratory also has the potential to represent the Crisis Management
Centre and other government departments and to facilitate non-government
departments, industry and academia in their research and development
initiatives.
