Services wins major industry award
Knowledge Agents at Dstl, part of the Knowledge Services Department,
was awarded the title of Best Information/Knowledge Team in a Public
Sector Environment yesterday evening at the International Information
Industry Awards ceremony held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel.

Dstl moves
its experts closer together
Dstl has today announced its decision to reduce the number of sites
on which it operates to three core sites. These sites will be Porton
Down in Wiltshire, Fort Halstead in Kent and Portsdown West near Portsmouth.

assists the US in missing girl hunt
Fort Halstead scientist Mark Yates recently lent his expertise to assist
US law enforcement officials in a hunt for a missing 14 year old girl,
who vanished from her home five years ago.

Defence scientists
identify the best nose for the job
Scientists at the Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl)
at Fort Halstead recognise that the sniffer dog is still far from being
replaced by technology and is increasingly being used for detection
purposes. For this reason, a three-year research programme was undertaken
by Dstl and the Anthrozoology Institute, University of Bristol to investigate
ways of improving how potential sniffer dogs are selected, reared and
trained.

Dstl to open DSEi Conference 2003
Martin Earwicker, CE at the Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory
(Dstl) will open the conference element of DSEi 2003 which is being
sponsored by Dstl. The Defence Systems and Equipment International (DSEi)
takes place at ExCel (Exhibition Centre London) in the Docklands from
the 9th to the 12th September 2003 and conference will open on the 9th
September at 14.30 hours.

appoints chairman as it takes delivery of prototype in the fight against
infectious diseases
Acolyte Biomedica, the UK-based infectious disease automation
company, has appointed David Evans as Chairman of the Board. Mr Evans
has a distinguished record in the UK diagnostics industry and as managing
director of Shield Diagnostics he saw through the merger in 1999 with
Axis of Norway to create Axis-Shield, the UK’s largest quoted
diagnostics company.

Robert Key, MP for Salisbury officially opened the new Dstl
Conservation Centre at Porton Down on the 12th June 2003.

first effective test for drug impairment Dstl is developing
a roadside test to measure the effects of drugs on drivers.

New participants
join 2003 JWID demonstration
Press Day Monday 23rd June 2003
The Joint Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (JWID) will
include four new participants at this year’s event. Military forces
from Japan, Singapore, Thailand and South Korea will join Australia,
Canada, NATO (Shape), New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United
States in the annual exercise.

Dstl assists in the
fight againist drugs
Using treasury funding of £100,000, the Defence, Science
and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is to develop a prototype machine that
can be used to detect narcotics. The technology will use a radio frequency
spectroscopic technique known as Quadrupole Resonance (QR).

share knowledge with local schools for National Science Week, 7-16th
March 2003
During National Science Week, 7th-16th March over 1,000 pupils from
eleven local schools will benefit from the expertise of the scientists
from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) at Porton
Down. The scientists will be out and about around Wiltshire with a series
of interactive roadshows..
